The strategic 434-km long Srinagar to Leh National Highway, which connects Kashmir Valley with the Ladakh region, has been opened for public now. After remaining closed for almost five months due to heavy snowfall, the highway is now open for transportation, thereby providing travelers and tourists the much-needed relief.

Srinagar to Leh Ladakh distance: 10 h 30 min (429.7 km) via NH1

The National Highway was flagged off by Lieutenant General K.J.S Dhillon, Commander of the Srinagar headquartered 15 Corps of the Army, in the presence of other senior officials at a ceremony in Zero Point.

An official in the knowhow stated that initially vehicles, including those of forces and trucks carrying supplies to Ladakh, were allowed to use the highway after which it was formally declared open.

The official also said that the road was opened after the BRO (Border Roads Organisation) completed the tedious task of clearing the snow. Officials further stated that despite several avalanches and a heavy accumulation of snow, the road has been thrown open for public in record time.

The snow-clearing operation was carried out by BRO under Project Beacon from Gagangir to Zero Point, whereas under Project Vijayak, the road was cleared from Drass to Zero Point. Both projects started operations from March 5, which were completed recently. The officials also mentioned that although a majority of snow clearance was done by machine, the efforts of the men behind those machines were commendable as it was very difficult to identify the road alignment. ( Leh to Srinagar by road )
